Sociocracy 3.0 – or S3 in short – is a very powerful collection of principles and modular, practical techniques. They provide an answer to many current challenges in organizations: becoming an agile, learning organization, participatory decision makings and collaborating effectively.

This 2-day program is the best way to get to know and experience S3 in depth. In this very practical and interactive course, you will learn to understand, apply and facilitate the S3 principles and patterns. You’ll work together with the other participants to practise these new techniques and our experienced trainers will share their pro tips & tricks. This way, you can immediately put things into practice within your team or organisation.

Maximum learning effect: preparation

To get the maximal impact from spending 2 days of physical learning together, a mandatory preparation is an integral part of this training. This preparation takes no more than a few hours and can take different forms:

  • You already followed an introduction to Sociocracy at iLean or another provider (and/or)
  • You already had practical experience with S3 patterns in your team or organisation (and/or)
  • You spend 2-3 hours in your own way to process the introductory material on S3 (which we provide you with after registration)

After enrolment, we’ll agree with you about the necessary preparation and provide you with the appropriate material.

Maximum learning effect: intervision

After this course, participants enthusiastically and successfully start working with the S3 patterns. To maximise the impact on your team or organisation, this training program includes an intervision session. This will be a two-hour meeting (possibly online) 6-8 weeks after the training. We will discuss your concrete experiments, answer your practical questions and share our tips and experience in further implementing and deepening S3. In this way, the material from the 2-day course is translated into your practice to the maximum extent.

During this training, the following topics are covered. Where possible, we practice the S3 techniques below using your real-life themes or examples.

  • Definition, origins and background of Sociocracy 3.0
  • The S3 principles
  • Identifying the needs and goals of the organisation using drivers and responding to them more consciously and effectively
  • How to structure and grow an agile organisation from within by navigating via tension

– Delegating responsibility to clear domains and how to work as a high-performing, self-governing team (circle) or individual (role)

– How to have several self-managing teams collaborate well and align on the organisation’s purpose

  • Co-creating proposals and strategies
  • Consent decision-making for effective and wise group decisions
  • Feedback mechanisms (peer review, meeting evaluation, ..) and artful participation to increase accountability and engagement
  • Effective meetings (governance meetings) and making and evaluating agreements in short learning cycles
  • S3 patterns around organisational structure to develop a working and agile structure in every situation that allows for maximum value creation
  • How to start implementing S3 patterns

Next to theory and exercises, we also provide sufficient reflection time so that you can translate what you have learned into your own practice, and have a dialogue about this with each other and the trainers.

Is Sociocracy 3.0 only suitable for IT or business organisations?

No, it is not. In any formal or informal organisation where people want to work together more consciously and effectively, S3 can be useful. The S3 patterns are used worldwide by schools and universities, healthcare institutions, social and non-profit organisations and for-profit companies. Both start-ups, SME’s and larger organisations. And next to the professional world, S3 is also used in sports clubs, associations and families. The broad and modular applicability of S3 patterns is one of its strengths.

What is Sociocracy 3.0 and how does it relate to Agile, Holacracy, Teal, etc?

Sociocracy 3.0 – or S3 – is a so-called ‘social technology’, which means that it provides us with very practical techniques and a framework for thinking about how to collaborate more consciously and effectively. Sociocracy 3.0 is a collection of over 70 patterns (techniques, processes, …) that can be used independently (they are modular and flexible) and that are underpinned by strong principles such as equivalence, transparency and continuous improvement. These patterns help teams or organisations to create an agile organisational structure, to govern in equivalence, participative decision-making and more conscious teamwork.

 

S3 is, just like Holacracy by the way, based on the Sociocratic Circle Organisation Method (cf. Endenburg), a system for managing in equivalence and on the basis of consent. The co-creators of Sociocracy 3.0 updated these techniques based on their years of experience and combined them with practices and principles from the Agile (product development) world. Sociocracy is therefore perfectly compatible with models such as Scrum and Kanban.

 

Models like Sociocracy 3.0 and Holacracy fit into the so-called ‘teal’ movement, in which organisations evolve towards more self-management, agility and humane collaborations.
